About the Artwork
I hollowed out a block of zelkova wood of a large-diameter tree and made a fresh water jar. The wood grains are straight and the form is simple, but as the tree rings are fine, I carved a curved surface to bring out a rich appearance. I also cut the wood to make sure that the wood grains of the body and cover would look connected. I took considerable care in the wiped urushi, taking into account that the vessel would be filled with water.

Wiped lacquer finish
Wiped lacquer (fuki urushi) is a wood-finishing technique consisting of a thin coat of lacquer. The lacquer is applied with a spatula or brush, rubbed in with a cotton cloth, and then wiped away using washi paper or clean fabric. Repeating the process numerous times produces a finish that brings out the wood’s grain and texture.
