About the Artist

Woodwork Forms Created Through Precise Design

Woodwork artist Tetsuya Hayashi pursues modern modeled beauty by fusing sophisticated sashimono (wood joinery) techniques with precise structural design. Honing his solid woodworking skills through carpentry and sashimono techniques, he established a meticulous artistic style utilizing moku-zōgan (wood inlay). His works, using fine wood such as jindai-boku (precious wood buried underground for hundreds of years), received high acclaim by winning the NHK Chairman's Award at the 73rd Japan Traditional Kōgei Exhibition—the premier open exhibition where the pinnacle of traditional craft techniques gathers. Harmonizing the memory of time spun by natural materials with exquisite modeled beauty, his creations bring refined dignity to space.
