About the Artwork
I made this for serving every day dishes and added bright maki-e on the rim as an accent.
The base is made of cherrywood and is turned on a lathe. The rim is shaped to show the maki-e.
The base color of the whole rim is gold with cherry blossoms using the togidashi maki-e method and leaves using the hira maki-e method designed.
As the inside is black with a glossy finish, I made sure to make a beautiful curved surface.
Togidashi maki-e*, hira maki-e**
* Togidashi maki-e: A maki-e method. After the pattern is drawn with lacquer, gold powder is applied and dried. Lacquer is applied over the surface again, dried, and finally polished.
**Hira-maki-e: A maki-e method. After drawing the pattern, applying gold powder and drying, the part where the pattern is drawn is polished.

Maki-e
Maki-e (literally “sprinkled pictures”) is a representative lacquerware technique that originated in Japan around 1,200 years ago. Maki-e is done by painting lacquer motifs on the surface of a piece using a fine brush and then sprinkling gold powder onto the lacquer before it hardens, producing luxurious decorations.
