About the Artist
The Form of a Quiet Prayer
Lacquer artist Yasunori Suto received the grand award, MEXT Award, at the 43rd Lacquerware Traditional Kōgei Exhibition (2026) where the top lacquer artists in Japan gather. Suto creates unique, beautiful pieces by combining graphical, geometric patterns using makie and metal sheet inlay with designs of delicate layers of light on dry lacquer bases formed freely by hardening hemp cloth with urushi lacquer. At the base of his artwork is his Catholic faith, and the forms hold a tranquil space for prayer.
Style
I produce my artwork using techniques and material that have been passed down for generations locally. I also try to use local items for my designs.
