About the Artist

Shaping the Beauty of Lacquer and Light Where Tradition and Innovation Intersect

Hyoetsu Miki, who carries on the lineage of Kyo-nuri (Kyoto-style lacquerware) for the fourth generation in Kyoto, delicately manipulates sabi—a mixture of raw urushi lacquer and clay powder—with a spatula to gracefully depict soft overlapping waves and the quietly shifting shadows of light on the lacquer surface. He is a highly talented artist who has won numerous prestigious awards, including the Konosuke Matsushita Memorial Award at the Kinki Traditional Kōgei Exhibition. Respecting traditional techniques while never being bound by them, he cherishes the belief of creating what he truly believes in. His unique artistic world is garnering attention both in Japan and overseas.

Style

Mainly producing lacquerware with wavy surfaces and those that are glossy. While respecting the traditional methods, techniques and material, I try to have an open mind and try to adopt things that I myself think would be good for the artwork.

Biography

• 1971
  Born as the first son of Kyo lacquerware artist 3rd Generation Hyoetsu Miki (real name: Keigo)
• 1994
  Graduated from Kyoto Arts and Crafts University, Faculty of Art, Craft Department, Lacquerware major
• 1995
  Completed the Kyoto City Traditional Industry Lacquerware Training Course
• 1997
  "Three Generations with Urushi Lacquer" exhibition at Kyoto Takashimaya Art Gallery
• 1998
  Completed training at the Kagawa Urushi Lacquerware Institute
• 2000
  "Three Generations with Urushi Lacquer" 2nd exhibition at Kyoto Takashimaya Art Gallery
• 2005
  Takes the name "Keiraku"
• 2008
