About the Artist
Expressing the Beauty of White Porcelain
Ceramic artist Tatsuya Goshima creates beautiful white porcelain using Amakusa pottery stone from his hometown Kumamoto. Without thinking of the design beforehand, he makes the form with his intuition on the potter's wheel to create stylish, contemporary vessels with silhouettes that change depending on the viewpoint. He has received many awards, including the 60th Anniversary Award at the West Japan Traditional Kōgei Exhibition held in Kyushu where the history of pottery lives on, and has also received the Incentive Award at Japan Traditional Kōgei Exhibition. Unbound by convention and leaving freedom of interpretation to the viewer, his elegant and beautiful forms charm many people.
Style
I try to create natural lines of plants and express the bumps and dips by carving. I use Amakusa pottery stones and form the vessels using a potter's wheel.
