About the Artist
Dyeing and Weaving with Her Fresh Sensibility
Akane Kamiya studied the basic traditional techniques of textiles in Okinawa and started her career as a textile artist. She mainly uses natural dyes and unrefined silk thread, suzushi, to make light, translucent kimonos. By weaving the dyed warp and weft threads alternately, she creates beautiful color gradation and a deep appearance. Her textiles, delicately woven with vitality of nature and storylines, have been highly evaluated, and she received the Prince Takamatsu Memorial Award at the 72nd Japan Traditional Kōgei Exhibition in 2025. She is attracting significant attention as an artist leading the future of Japan's traditional artwork.
Style
Making translucent kimonos with natural dye and raw silk (silk thread that us not refined) using mainly kasuri techniques and other traditional Okinawan dyeing techniques.
