About the Artwork
Made by wood turning a rare old persimmon tree, several hundreds of years old, from Hachinohe, Aomori.
This persimmon wood has especially beautiful patterns. I used a special processing method in order to show the entire wood grain without discontinuing the grain pattern between the lid and the body.
On the sides, I carved thin lines to add a nice touch. I used tortoise-shell inlay on the knob of the inner lid, and finished the whole piece with wiped urushi lacquer.

Techniques Used
Wood turning
In wood turning (hikimono), a piece of wood is rotated on a lathe and shaped with various cutting tools. Wood turning is suited to the creation of round trays, containers, and bowls. Different blades and cutting angles can be used to produce a wide range of forms. Balanced, symmetrical forms are made by spinning the lathe at a constant speed.
