About the Artwork
I bought a three-foot long log of the raidenboku wood used for this piece more than 20 years ago from a lumberman who cut the tree in a homestead woodland near the Tone River in Ota, Gunma, and I sawed and trimmed the wood. The color and conditions when cutting the wood were similar to those of Honduras mahogany that I used when I made a guitar in the past. (The raidenboku I used is different from the raidenboku listed in a general wood dictionary.) I hollowed out the main body, and I turned the side boards on a lathe to curve them. I finished the piece with wiped urushi using sappanwood dye. I carved out the handle from a silver square bar.

Hollow work
In hollow work (kurimono), gouges and chisels are used to hand-carve hollow vessels from a block of wood. Complicated curves and rounded forms are a common feature of hollow work.
