About the Artwork

I used Japanese amur cork wood with beautiful wood grain. Among a large piece of wood that I had been drying for about 20 years, I used the part with beautiful wood grains. I hollowed it out and finished it with wiped urushi. Hollowing is one of my favorite techniques, as I can form the vessel freely with curved lines. I repeated the process of applying Japanese raw lacquer and polishing with waterproof abrasive paper (coarse to smooth) more than 20 times to make the wood grain stand out. The form of this vessel is a flower with seven pointed petals.

Techniques Used

Hollow work

In hollow work (kurimono), gouges and chisels are used to hand-carve hollow vessels from a block of wood. Complicated curves and rounded forms are a common feature of hollow work.

Wiped lacquer finish

Wiped lacquer (fuki urushi) is a wood-finishing technique consisting of a thin coat of lacquer. The lacquer is applied with a spatula or brush, rubbed in with a cotton cloth, and then wiped away using washi paper or clean fabric. Repeating the process numerous times produces a finish that brings out the wood’s grain and texture.
