About the Artwork

The work of a wood artist starts from being charmed by the beauty of wood. Not just any wood will do. The artist chooses the wood he thinks is just right and cuts out the best part to work on. Unlike paint, where you can mix colors to make your original color, wood grains cannot be made. The image of the artwork comes to mind as I keep plenty of wood on hand and look at them daily.
But in order to make something, you usually need a certain amount of wood. Even if the wood is beautiful, it's nearly impossible to make something with just one piece. But I wanted to make something out of this particular piece of wood and came up with the idea of making a board for hanging flowers. It is originally used to hang a flower vase, but this piece can be enjoyed alone like a painting.
Chestnut wood is a ring-porous wood with beautiful, clear wood grain. It looks like zelkova wood, but unlike the bold and dynamic zelkova wood, it is not so hard, and has a modest and gentle impression. It is rich in elegance and is essential for sukiya-zukuri (style of a tea ceremony arbor). I tried to highlight the wood grain, and to add some flavor, I made scrapes on the surface with a small plane. A simple wall becomes a tokonoma (alcove in a Japanese-style room) just by hanging this piece. Both sides of the board can be enjoyed.
