ARTISTS & ARTWORKS RELATED ”Ink resist decorations”

The Ink resist decorations (sumihajiki) technique of creating reverse patterns on a dark background was first used in Nabeshima ware (ceramics made by the Saga Nabeshima fuedal domain to be presented to the Edo Shogunate) in the 17th century. By drawing patterns on the base with ink and applying paint over the patterns, the glue within the ink becomes a water repellent and repels the paint. When bisque fired, the ink evaporates, leaving behind white patterns.
