About the Artist

Expressions of Modern Tamba Ware Woven by Colors

Shusaku Ichino represents the third generation of the Shozo Kiln in Tamba, one of the Six Ancient Kilns of Japan. Building upon the research data on glazes accumulated by his grandfather, the founder of the kiln, he has pursued expressions of multi-layering glaze application by delicately overlapping glazes of various colors. Incorporating meticulous gradations created by the boundaries and overlays of colors, he depicts deep, quiet scenes on the surface of his vessels. He is also particular about thin, sharp forms that consider the texture of the glaze, continuously searching for a modeled beauty that brings dignity to space. He received the Tokyo Governor Award at the 73rd Japan Traditional Kōgei Exhibition. Valuing the once-in-a-lifetime expressions accidentally painted by fire and glaze, he continues to pioneer the art of color and light.
