About the Artist

Makie Flowers Blooming on Wajima Lacquerware

Lacquer artist Satomi Mizushiri is rooted in her hometown Wajima and makes lacquerware mainly using the traditional makie techniques. She draws exquisite patterns with gold and silver makie powder and creates gorgeous and elegant lacquerware. While keeping up the tradition of Wajima lacquerware in Ishikawa where the traditional culture lives on, she creates one-and-only pieces with her delicate aesthetic sense and refined skills.

  Born in Wajima City
• 1970
  Studied under lacquerware (makie) artist Shoichiro Tasaki (received the Order of Culture, Medal with Purple Ribbon)
  Received the name "Satomi" from her predecessor
• 1974
  Submitted to the 21st Japan Traditional Kōgei Exhibition for the first time
  Makie Box for Tea Utensils "Tama Sudare" selected for the first time
• 1977
  Becomes Full Member of the Japan Kogei Association
• 1986
  Eggshell makie "Nogi" submitted and selected for the first time at the 3rd Lacquerware Traditional Kōgei Exhibition
  Submitted to the Hokutokai Exhibition, an exhibition held by Full Members of the Japan Kogei Association
• 1995
  Submitted to "Lacquerware Artists in Wajima" Exhibition at Wajima Museum of Urushi Art (up to now)
• Selected for the Japan Traditional Kōgei Exhibition 22 times from 1986 up to now
