Tomoko Ono

I try to make comforting designs using plants we are familiar with. I do everything by myself from designing to dry lacquering and applying makie on the wood base.

  • 1942 Born in Ehime Prefecture
  • 1980 Studied under Kazumi Murose (designated as Living National Treasure in 2008)
  • 1988 Selected for the East Japan Traditional Kōgei Exhibition for the first time
  • 1989 Selected for the Lacquerware Traditional Kōgei Exhibition for the first time
  • 1994 "White Clover" submitted to the Lacquerware Traditional Kōgei Exhibition purchased by the Imperial Household Agency
  • 1998 Selected for the 45th Japan Traditional Kōgei Exhibition for the first time
  • 2001 Becomes Full Member of the Japan Kōgei Association
  • 2006 Lacquerware Artists 3 person Exhibition at Gallery Tanaka (Ginza, Tokyo)
  • 2007 Took part in the successors training program for "thick shell raden" held by the Japan Kōgei Association
    Trained under Living National Treasure Shosai Kitamura
  • 2010 Submitted to the East Japan Traditional Kōgei Exhibition 50th Anniversary Exhibition "Art Crafts in the 21st Century : A View from Abroad" held at the MOA Museum of Art
  • 2015 Submitted to the "Raden Yoyo (Shining Raden)" Exhibition held at Mitsukoshi Nihombashi Main Store

  • Currently lecturer of lacquer art and makie at Mejiro Urushi Gakusha
