Shisen Kodama

Weaving three-dimensional textiles using the Nishijin tsumegaki hon tsuzure-ori technique (a traditional technique using finger nails, and hand looms operated by only hands and feet) with heartwarming gentle, light colors.

  • 1952 Born in Osaka, moved to Nishinomiya City, Hyogo Prefecture at the age of 9
  • 1980 Moved to Kyoto, joined and tsuzureori company
  • 1982 Retired from the tsuzureori company, became independent and started studying tsuzureori on her own
  • 1989 Instructed the actors and had her hands appear on Yomiuri TV drama "Hana Chirimen"
  • 1996 Designated as Traditional Craftsman by the Traditional Crafts Industry Promotion Association Foundation for the year 1996
  • 1997 KBS Kyoto TV program "Artist Introduction" broadcasted
  • 1998 Visited Lyon and Paris, France for inspection and training as a representative of Nishijin
    Appeared on NHK BS TV program "Kyoto", "Kenko no Tsubo (Health Tips)" etc.
    Selected for the Japan Traditional Kōgei Exhibition
  • 2000 First solo exhibition in March at Kyoto Orinasukan, appeared on Kyoto Channel (CS channel)
