About the Artist
Contemporary Sculptural Beauty Alive in the Karatsu Tradition
Son of Moritoshi Tokusawa—who established the Chōsen Karatsu technique in Sue Town, Fukuoka Prefecture, a site of goyō-gama kilns continuing since the Edo period—ceramic artist Mitsunori Tokusawa inherits both precise craftsmanship and spirit. Possessing a deep understanding of traditional Karatsu techniques and materials, he fuses bold forms shaped by his own sensibility with rich, colorful glazing. Deeply devoted to chanoyu, he creates works that possess a dignified presence while combining exceptional usability that fits comfortably in the hand. Selected for the Japan Traditional Kōgei Exhibition and the Kikuchi Biennial, he continues to energetically present his works nationwide. With the weight of tradition as his foundation, he tirelessly pursues new forms of artwork that harmonize with contemporary spaces.
Style
Producing ceramics using techniques of Karatsu ware and adding originality to the material by making unique forms and changing the tones of glaze.
