About the Artwork
A vertically long oval vase.
After forming on a potter's wheel, I carved the clay vertically in stripes. Next, I inlayed strips of blue colored clay, carved the surface, and smoothed it. I then thinly engraved lines in the blue parts and in the middle of the uncarved red clay parts using a plane, applied white muddy clay in the engraved lines with a brush, and carved and smoothed the surface again. After biscuit firing, I applied traditional Mushiake ash glaze and fired it again to bring out the colorful line patterns.
It is a good-sized vase with a modern design made with inlays.

Inlay ceramics
Inlay (zōgan) ceramics are created by making incisions on the surface of a piece which are then filled with a differently colored clay to create a design. After the clay is inlaid, a glaze is applied and the piece is completed upon firing.
