Kirikane is a traditional technique that has been passed down for generations from the ancient times. I try to make pieces that people would feel like talking to and those that would be appreciated by the future generation. I hope you enjoy the gently shining colorful world of kirikane.
View DetailAbout the Artwork
When the box is opened, a pattern appears as if it's dancing. I wanted people to enjoy a little surprise every time they opened the box, so I designed a double layered box. I placed crossing rays of light and flowers of light blown in the wind on the sides, and created an image of the flowers gathering to become one big flower in the end.

Techniques
Kirikane cut foil embellishing
Kirikane cut foil embellishing was originally used to lavishly decorate Buddhist images. Today the technique is employed on decorative boxes and other craft objects. First, layers of gold leaf made by beating gold into thin, paper-like sheets are heated and combined over a charcoal fire. The resulting foil is cut into shapes such as lines, squares, and triangles using a bamboo knife. A brush is used to apply the cut foil in the desired pattern, and the piece is complete.
