About the Artwork
These decorative dishes were made by cutting lines and dots into the surface with the technique called “Chinkin”.When gold leaf or gold dust is inserted into the surface, it creates a brilliantly glittering gold design.
Once made, a cut cannot be corrected, so there is no room for error.

Techniques Used
Chinkin
For chinkin (“sunken gold”), a chisel or knife is used to incise lines and dots into a lacquered surface. Gold leaf or fine gold powder is then inlaid into the grooves, creating a fine and delicate design.
