About the Artwork
Choosing the material is very important in woodwork as we utilize the natural features. Mulberry trees with a small diameter have regular wood grains like those used for alcove posts, but the trees with medium to large diameters that are used for woodwork often have stemborers or bark pockets, and good quality wood is rare. This mulberry wood was difficult to to cut at the market. As it was too short, I was unable to ask the lumbermill to cut it, so I cut it myself with a chain saw. There was only a small amount of wood that could be used. Encountering good material is truly a joy.

Wiped lacquer finish
Wiped lacquer (fuki urushi) is a wood-finishing technique consisting of a thin coat of lacquer. The lacquer is applied with a spatula or brush, rubbed in with a cotton cloth, and then wiped away using washi paper or clean fabric. Repeating the process numerous times produces a finish that brings out the wood’s grain and texture.
