About the Artwork
I carved out the cover and main body of this covered vessel from a single block of horse chestnut wood. As the wood grain patterns of horse chestnut wood are quite strong, I finished this piece with wiped urushi while reducing the gloss to keep a good balance. The distinctive points of this piece are the simple curves and three-dimensional jointing part. The cover and main body are formed to fit and stay in place, making the vessel look like a single object with no opening.

Wiped lacquer finish
Wiped lacquer (fuki urushi) is a wood-finishing technique consisting of a thin coat of lacquer. The lacquer is applied with a spatula or brush, rubbed in with a cotton cloth, and then wiped away using washi paper or clean fabric. Repeating the process numerous times produces a finish that brings out the wood’s grain and texture.
