About the Artwork
I mainly produce hollowed boxes from zelkova, horse chestnut and maple wood. This time I made a box of maple wood using hollowing techniques. I tried to enhance the charm of a hollowed box with the appearance of the curved lines by carving decorative flowing ridge lines from the top towards the sides and finishing the box with wiped urushi.

Wiped lacquer finish
Wiped lacquer (fuki urushi) is a wood-finishing technique consisting of a thin coat of lacquer. The lacquer is applied with a spatula or brush, rubbed in with a cotton cloth, and then wiped away using washi paper or clean fabric. Repeating the process numerous times produces a finish that brings out the wood’s grain and texture.
