About the Artwork

I created a covered vessel with the image of a shoot sprouting from a tree stump. The cover is made of Jindai zelkova finished with beeswax, and the body is zelkova finished in wiped urushi. I applied a mixture of black pigment and urushi lacquer on the outside of the body. By making the body black, I tried to accentuate the form and make the wood texture of the cover stand out. I finished the inside in wiped urushi, and sprinkled silver powder on the rim so that the inside would look bright when the box is opened.
