About the Artwork
Using zelkova wood, I designed this lidded container formed into the shape of a sacred gem and decorated it by inlaying gold into its wood grain. The sacred gem is said to ward off misfortune, purify muddy water and make things turn out the way you want them to be. It is believed that possessing a sacred gem will make all your wishes come true and even create treasures you wish to have.

Techniques Used
Wood turning
In wood turning (hikimono), a piece of wood is rotated on a lathe and shaped with various cutting tools. Wood turning is suited to the creation of round trays, containers, and bowls. Different blades and cutting angles can be used to produce a wide range of forms. Balanced, symmetrical forms are made by spinning the lathe at a constant speed.
