About the Artwork
I used hollowing techniques to form the beautiful black persimmon wood.
Black persimmon wood is usually cut following the direction of the grain, and I consider this as a unique charm of black persimmon wood pieces.
The wood grain on the top of the lid are growth rings, but a mysterious black and white pattern can be seen.
I tried to harmonize the beautiful wood grain and unusual form.
Finished with wiped urushi.

Hollow work
In hollow work (kurimono), gouges and chisels are used to hand-carve hollow vessels from a block of wood. Complicated curves and rounded forms are a common feature of hollow work.
