About the Artwork
A scene of a day at sea.
The overlapping waves sway and change as they come and go, just like the inside of a person's heart.
The waves are expressed with various shells and the fusezaishiki technique, where colors or images are painted on the surface and then covered with thin, semitransparent shells. A lacquer artwork with mother-of-pearl inlay that took 3 years until completion.

Techniques Used
Mother-of-pearl inlay (Raden)
Mother-of-pearl inlay (Raden) is a decorative technique that uses the iridescent inner layer of abalone shell, turban shell, pearl oyster shell, or other mollusk shells. The technique came to Japan from China 1,300 years ago, and pieces featuring mother-of-pearl inlay are included among the artifacts at the Shōsōin Repository in Nara.
