Embossing
Embossing, or metal chasing (uchidashi), is the process of using punches to raise designs on metal by repeatedly hammering the face or back of a piece (the latter technique being known as “repoussage”). Embossed work can take the shape of highly pronounced three-dimensional forms or shallow reliefs like those seen on brooches and ornaments for kimono obi.

Comment on Award
I am very honored and happy to have received the Japan Kōgei Association New Artist Award. I wanted to express the scene of the Sea of Japan that I saw from Kanazawa in this piece. Using iron, I formed the bowl with the image of a luxury cruise ship, and expressed the ship sailing through the rough waves in the rain with damascene inlay. This was the first time I designed and made a piece where the form and decoration were linked. Encouraged by this award, I will keep looking for new challenges and do my best in making my artwork. Thank you very much.
