Tōso dolls
Tōso dolls (tōso ningyō) are made of a modeling compound called tōso (a mixture of paulownia sawdust and paste) attached to a core of solid paulownia. Tōso can be freely fashioned while soft to produce all manner of forms. The molded forms are thoroughly dried before use to ensure that they won’t warp.
Kamibari
“Pasted paper.” Designs are created by applying dyed washi paper.

Comment on Award
I truly feel that making a doll is facing oneself. I wish I could tell what colors and finish the doll is wishing for by examining the formed doll base closely. I wanted to express the subtle glow of the moon on the thirteenth night of the lunar month through the doll's costume and applied layers of thin Japanese traditional paper on the gold leaf to dull the shine. I will continue to work hard to see and express true beauty.
