Techniques Used
Blue underglaze
Blue and white porcelain (sometsuke) is made by painting blue underglaze decorations on white bisque-fired pottery using a cobalt-rich pigment known as zaffer (gosu). The piece is then coated with a transparent glaze and fired. This technique for making blue and white porcelain has been used in China since around the twelfth century during the Yuan Dynasty.

When I started making blue and white ceramics, as my paintings were concrete objects, I focused rather strongly on the painting. Therefore, I was often criticized that my artwork was a vessel-shaped canvas. At that time, I had no idea what that meant. In recent years, I have become more aware of the relationship between the ceramic form and the decoration. However, as I focus more on the form, the proportion of the decoration becomes smaller, and as the variety of the forms is limited, I have gradually begun to notice that there was not much change in my work. This time I considered what kind of form I should make to highlight the pictorial beauty of the painting in underglaze blue. I always feel uneasy when I make changes, but I have been very encouraged to receive this award and will continue to work hard going forward.
