Tsumugi silk
Tsumugi silk is woven from spun silk thread (tsumugi ito). Tsumugi is not as smooth or glossy as reeled silk, and features a simple, nubby texture.
Kasuri weaving
Kasuri weaving (kasuriori, “blurred weave”) is a type of ikat weaving done with threads that have been resist dyed, leaving sections of the thread undyed. The threads are then aligned and woven to create stripes, checkered patterns, or pictorial motifs.

Comment on Award
There are many waterways around my studio, and I always hear the sound of water nearby while working. The water surface sparkles luxuriously as the light of the sun and moon shines on it. I expressed the fluctuation of water with the gradation and variation of sizes of the kasuri between the bold stripes that look as if they are floating and sinking in the water, and roughly added some smears to the kasuri.
Receiving this 70th Anniversary Award, I feel deeply moved thinking about the long history of the Japan Traditional Kōgei Exhibition and its future. This award has encouraged me to continue pursuing my way of expression. Thank you very much.
