Description
Wire cloisonné enamel (yūsen shippō) uses strips of silver wire to create partitions between areas of differently colored enamel. This is the basic method for producing cloisonné enamel ware. The deep luster demonstrated by wire cloisonné enamel work is achieved by repeatedly applying layers of enamel and firing the piece with each new layer.
Process
- STEP 1
The base vessel is formed out of copper or silver.
- STEP 2
Underglaze is applied and the piece is fired. A design is created with silver wires and then the wires are fired to the piece.
- STEP 3
Enamel is inserted in the compartments created by the wires.
- STEP 4
The piece is fired in an electric kiln at about 850℃. The fired piece is completed upon polishing.
