Yamagata Cast Iron (Yamagata imono) is a traditional craft produced around Yamagata City, Yamagata Prefecture with a history of approximately 1,000 years. It is said that the production began when metal casters found the sand of this place perfect for metal casting. It is known for its thin, delicate texture and accurate shapes. A wide variety of products, from traditional tea ceremony kettles and iron kettles to daily-use items with modern designs, are being produced.
