Straw ash (warabai) is ash made by burning rice straw and wheat straw. It is used as material for ceramic glazes. It contains a high proportion of silica (a component of glass), and when mixed with glaze, it makes it cloudy white. It is an essential material for making white glaze for Hagi ware etc., and it gives the vessel a soft texture and matte finish.
