ARTISTS & ARTWORKS RELATED ”Edo-kimekomi doll”

Edo Kimekomi Dolls (Edo kimekomi ningyo) have been produced in Tokyo for approximately 280 years. The production was started by an artisan from Kyoto in the mid-Edo period. Thin grooves are carved in the body made of toso (a mixture of paulownia sawdust and paste) or wood, and the edges of cloth are tucked into the grooves. The plump forms and refined beauty are its charms. Their hina dolls are especially well known.
