Castor aralia (sen) is a broad-leaved tree of the Araliaceae family that grows wild throughout Japan. It is characterized by its bright pale yellow-white color and strong, shiny annual ring pattern similar to that of zelkova. It is relatively light, soft, and easy to process, and has a beautiful wood grain. Because of the beautiful wood grain, it is used widely for furniture, decorative veneers, lacquerware bases, and various woodcrafts.
