ARTISTS & ARTWORKS RELATED ”Akama inkstone”

Akama Inkstones (Akama suzuri) are inkstones produced around Shimonoseki and Ube in Yamaguchi Prefecture. They are said to have been presented to Yoritomo Minamoto during the Kamakura Period, and have a history of more than 800 years. They are made of dense, reddish-purple stone, which makes it possible to grind the ink finely and create rich colored ink. Delicate carvings are applied, making the inkstones practical with artistic value.
