About the Artist
Creating Lacquerware with Traditional Kaga Makie
Tadashi Shimode is a lacquer artist who carries on the tradition of Kaga makie. He studied under makie artist Ikko Kiyose I and learned his advanced techniques. He mainly uses shishiai polished makie techniques which have many processes and require high-level skills, and makes classical lacquerware combined with a modern feel. His artwork, cultivated in the historical culture of Kanazawa, Ishikawa, is sturdy and elegant with a strong presence, and draws those who see his artwork into his lacquer art world.
Style
As a true successor of the Kaga makie that has been made in Kanazawa since the Edo period, I have been preserving the traditional designs, techniques and skills, and make artwork with classic patterns. At the same time, I also make artwork being inspired by something like a flower that evokes a scenery or feelings from past memories.
If someone sees my work and feels saved and relieved, I would think the effort I put into creating the work was worthwhile.
