Ziricote (shamugaki) is a wood that is originally from South and Central America and belongs to the Boraginaceae family. Like the black persimmon wood in Japan, it has irregular black stripes. Although it is a tough and heavy wood, as it shines beautifully when polished, it is used to make Buddhist altars, fine furniture, ornaments, and musical instruments.
